According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) stats, the mortality rate is currently estimated to be between 1-3 per cent, far lower than the 10 per cent from SARS and 35 per cent from MERS. So far, 3,119 deaths have been reported.

What is coronavirus?
Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness caused by a new virus.
What are the symptoms?
It typically causes flu-like symptoms including fever and cough. In some these symptoms develop into chest congestion and shortness of breath. It seems to start with a fever, followed by a dry cough. The incubation period varies between 2-14 days even if the patient does not display any symptoms.
How to protect yourself
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use a sanitizer
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
- Always cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze, then dispose of the used tissue
- Stay home if you feel unwell, and seek medical attention
Authorities in the UAE have urged the public not to panic as efforts are being undertaken to stop the spread of the virus.
